Climate Tech is a thing but will it save us?

Not going to lie, I only recently discovered that Climate Tech is a thing and it's big.

Google Trends is showing that it's mostly been gaining in popularity since October 2021, especially in the US. I did a little research and it turns out that there's already many companies, start-ups and investors focused solely on leveraging tech to work on climate change.

Just the other day some big companies created a one billion dollar fund for carbon removal technologies. That's some decent funding. You can read about it in this article.
The fund was created by Stripe, Alphabet (Google), Meta (Facebook), Shopify and McKinsey.

So I'd say Climate Tech is definitely relevant for us DHackers!

So here's some things I find interesting about Climate Tech. It's not an essay, simply me writing down some things I'd like to share with all of you :)

Will technology save us from Climate Change?

My personal opinion is that technology alone is not going to save us from climate change. I think a lot of the challenges require system changes and technology can help accelerate them or provide alternatives. So I believe Climate Tech companies will need a strong vision and strategy to be really effective.

If you're interested in the subject, here's a good presentation that was hosted by the MIT Media Lab. I'd love to get your opinion on the matter in the comments :)

There's a lot of good jobs in Climate Tech

And they've got good salaries. Since most of us work in tech, we might as well get paid working on climate change rather than optimising ads for huge companies...

Check out the following two job platforms:
ClimatePeople
Climatebase

A lot of these jobs are remote too !
These platforms also offer custom services to help you understand the industry and find what's best for you. It could be interesting to get them to detail their thoughts in our community so I just got in touch with them :)

If you're interested in building Climate Tech yourself, here's some inspiration.

The people at Earth Hero have built an app to help you learn how to respond to climate change by discovering personalised, positive steps you can take to care for our planet. I'm checking it out right now :)

I'd love to here your thoughts on Climate Tech.

  • Are you interested in getting a job in the industry?
  • Do you want to build Climate Tech?
  • What are your favourite examples of Climate Tech?

Love this!! It's so true — tech alone won't save us from the climate crisis, but it certainly is a piece of the pie! Where there's so much investment, there are equally as many jobs..
